Nestlé Professional has signed up to a government initiative that aims to help consumers reduce their salt intake to a maximum level of 6g a day for adults.
“The health of the nation remains a key issue and is one that the government recognises must be tackled strategically and holistically across the entire food industry. Salt reduction initiatives are a major part of this,” said Neil Stephens, managing director of Nestlé Professional UK&I.
The F9 Salt Reduction 2017 pledge is a government Public Health Responsibility Deal initiative which launched in May 2014. It sets new targets for salt reduction across 76 specific food categories, to be met by 2017. Companies signing up to the pledge commit to supporting and enabling consumers to achieve the reduced intake levels.
Stephens said new product innovations would be a key part of Nestlé’s strategy in meeting these targets, while the company already offers nutrition training online “to drive awareness of the issues and solutions across the industry”.
The new salt intake levels were recommended by the Scientific Advisory Commission on Nutrition, which is composed of independent experts.
